utism
is a genetic disorder affecting 1/500 children, mostly boys. Although autistic
disorder clearly runs in families, the genetic cause is unknown. Scientists
at Vanderbilt and around the world are searching for genes that might contribute
to this disorder. Help from families with children who have autism is the most
powerful tool we have in finding a cause and eventually a cure.
Vanderbilt is part of a multicenter collaborative alliance dedicated to studying the genetics of autism. Vanderbilt investigators Dr. Jonathan Haines and Dr. James Sutcliffe are actively involved in this promising endeavor.
